A long awaited album has arrived with the seven year hiatus of A$AP Rocky’s discography finally over, and “Don’t Be Dumb” was worth the wait.
Before I started to listen to it, the amount of features and collaborations made with the album was the main factor on why I was interested in covering it, some standouts being Tyler, Doechii, Gorillaz, Thundercat, Danny Elfman, and Mike Dean.
Another aspect of the album I adore is the cover itself, as shown. Tim Burton was the artist of the zany characters. It’s awesome to see some of his art being featured on an album rather than film or books.
Now I am not the biggest fan of the lyrics, as I prefer lyrics to reflect an overarching theme of a project. However the flow of said lyrics is as great as always.
Another great aspect of the album I found exceptional was the variety of the vibes of the tracks. It can go from an intense screeching roar like “STFU” to a really dispiriting and unsettling song like “THE END” and “WHISKEY.”
The standout track for me was “STAY HERE 4 LIFE” as I really enjoyed the Brent Faiyaz feature with his ethereal vocals and the message of the song being really strong for me. It went along like a love story as I always fall for good storytelling in art. The production was the best seen on the album in my opinion.
Rocky delivered more of his unique production style as that is his greatest quirk compared to other artists, none will stand toe-to-toe with him on that aspect.
