Dong advances to state wrestling finals; Alison Coykendall takes fifth

Six Mustang boys will compete at the state wrestling tournament this weekend

Central’s Lydia Dong won her first three matches at the state wrestling tournament in Wichita and will wrestle for the state 125-pound championship later today.
Dong, a junior who now has a 25-6 record, will take on Garden City’s Maya Tarbet, 20-7, in the championship match.
Dong was one of four Mustang wrestlers to qualify for the state tournament. Senior Alison Coykendall placed fifth at 190 pounds after winning three of her five matches at state. Senior Amelia Coykendall and sophomore Haylie James both went 1-2 at state and didn’t place.
The Mustang girls placed seventh out of 16 teams at the regional tournament at Dodge city, beating eighth-ranked Manhattan.
Six Central boys qualified for the state tournament, which will be this Friday and Saturday at Hartman Arena in Wichita.
Boys qualifiers include seniors Dawson Hogan and Isaac Phimvongsa as well as sophomores Jase Adam and Ty Young, all of whom qualified last year as well. New state qualifiers include freshman Abram Owings and junior Carlos Aguilar.
