For the first time since 2009, the Mustang football team has kicked off the season with a 4-0 start.
So far, the ‘Stangs have taken down Salina South, Ark City, Haysville Campus, and now Goddard Eisenhower, achieving an undefeated first half of the regular season.
Senior Cooper Reves said the sky is the limit for this season.
“If we work harder in practice and continue to play the way we are, and take things seriously, we should be able to go undefeated,” senior running back Cooper Reves said.
The Mustangs defeated Eisenhower 49-20 on Friday night for the first time since 2018 to keep the undefeated streak alive.
“Beating Eisenhower for the first time felt good,” said Reves, who has rushed for 211 yards against Eisenhower and has eight total touchdowns this season. “Even last year the score wasn’t close but we had a few mistakes that caused it. Beating them by a big margin felt really good.”
In addition to the fact that the team had not defeated Eisenhower in seven years, it was head coach Mark Sandbo’s first win against the Tigers.
“They’ve kind of been our Achilles heel, they’ve had some really good football teams, and we’ve had some really good games with them,” Sandbo said. “But unfortunately, we’re just on the wrong side of the score board.”
Before the season started, the Mustangs were preparing to dominate their opponents with a revamped starting lineup.
“I definitely thought it was possible to go 4-0 with the guys on the team that put in work during the off season,” junior quarterback Griffin Hall said. “The success we’ve had is from all of us playing together for a while, and the coach preparing us well every week.”
The Mustangs have put together a game plan to excel and continue this winning streak.
“It all starts with the guys up front, you know the (defensive) linemen fit their gap and do the right thing which helps the people behind them,” senior captain Jesus Delgado said.
At the halfway point of the regular season the team is ranked 9th in 5A by the Wichita Eagle.
“You know the jobs are not finished yet. We still haven’t won the league,” Delgado said. “Season is only halfway done, there’s room for opportunities, and growth on the team even though we’re looking really good so far, I love these guys.”
