The “Olivia Rodrigo: GUTS World Tour” movie came out on Oct. 29 exclusively on Netflix. It gives you a “front row seat” look at the tour, with extra behind the scenes clips included.
While I enjoyed the movie, watching the tour from behind the screen and getting to watch it in person are truly different experiences. I was fortunate enough to be able to see it live.
The atmosphere from being in a stadium filled with thousands of cheering fans, versus sitting on the couch at home watching the TV screen and getting to enjoy it all to yourself, can be a nice feature with having the movie version of the tour.
I had also liked how Rodrigo had interacted with the camera, in order to make it apply more to the viewers at home, while also maintaining contact with the live audience.
I was not impressed by the movie setlist leaving out three songs that are a part of the GUTS (Deluxe) album. The movie was only one hour and 45 minutes long, compared to longer concert films. I believe they could have added more songs in there.
However, it was a great surprise to see Rodrigo bring out special guest artist Chappell Roan to sing a duet of a popularized song “HOT TO GO!” Roan had also been an opener of the tour for the first couple of shows.
My favorite part of the movie was getting to see Rodrigo perform her song “so american” from the deluxe version of the album. It came out later on tour, so I was unable to see it live because I went to one of the first shows. So, being able to see it up close and live in the movie was an amazing bonus.
The movie overall was great, but nothing can compare to being able to experience a concert live. Memories made live simply cannot just be retold on the big screen.
