With a varsity squad tripled in size from last year, head coach Alyssa Waldron is looking forward to the girls golf season to come.
“I am excited to have more than just one varsity golfer this year,” Waldron said. “I cannot wait to see the progress our girls continue to make.”
Head golf coach Alyssa Waldron has a goal this year to have more girls playing at the varsity level, which requires the athletes to play a full 18-hole course. At the first meet, the team had three athletes compete and all placed in the top 40.
“Eighteen holes is not a walk in the park,” Waldron said. “We are trying to get more confidence and stamina.”
Junior Sarah Day spent time in the off season working on her skills and gaining confidence.
“Off-season work plays a huge part in my golf season because it is impossible to get better without working on it often,” Day said. “It is so easy to lose the progress you made if you do not stay consistent.”
Junior Mya Clark worked on more specific skills over the off season.
“My goal for this season was to minimize my putting strokes,” Clark said. “It felt great to achieve this and shows that practice really does pay off.”
The golf team is not only improving their skills, but working towards creating a kind team community, senior Mackenzie Wisbey said.
“Being a senior on the team has made me feel a bigger sense of responsibility.” Wisbey said. “I want to be as welcoming as possible to the new members and encourage our members to return next season.”
Wisbey said that the best part of the golf team is the friendly environment.
“It is easy to forget that I am actually doing a sport,” Wisbey said. “It feels like a leisurely hangout.”
The friendly team environment and all around improvement has set the tone for the rest of the season.
“At the end of the meet,” Waldron said, “Talking to the girls made me excited for what is coming this year.”
