McHenry, Shaffer lead Mustangs to 13th state tennis championship

All-important doubles match earns Mustangs individual and team gold


Seniors Reed McHenry and Max Shaffer closed out their high school careers in style on Saturday, leading the Mustangs to the 5A state tennis championship with a victory in the doubles competition.

Central has now won the state tennis championship 13 times. McHenry and Shaffer delivered it with a victory that kept their record a perfect 38-0 this season.

McHenry and Shaffer defeated Wright and Wright of Maize South 6-3, 6-4 to win the doubles title, and that match ultimately decided the team championship as well as the Mustangs edged Maize South 40-37 on South’s home court.

Central’s other doubles team, seniors Brady Stack and McCabe Green, finished fourth. Singles players Connor and Collin Phelps, both juniors, finished seventh and 10th, respectively.
