Senior Chloe Guillot speaks during the student walkout March 14.

From 10 a.m. to 10:17 a.m. hundreds of students walked out of Salina Central for 17 minutes to show support and remembrance for the February shooting victims at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Florida.

There were 17 student speakers.

Every minute a new student went up and read about the Parkland shooting victims.

For 17 minutes everyone was silent including the community members who came to watch.

“I wanted to be here out of support for the message, remembrance for those who died. That’s important to be a part of but also as principal my number one priority is to make sure that our building is safe. Also, when Carolyn came up and talked to me about it I was pleased with how well she went about it. I enjoy when students come together and want to see things through. I feel like everyone who came out did an amazing job, especially these group of students – they did a great job,” said principal Nate Showman.

The protest was put on in a peaceful manor on and organized by senior Carolyn Gutsch and her peers with the help of Mr. Showman.

“I know in a way people say people kill people but guns is a big way to kill a mass and they say a knife can do the same thing, however if someone starts stabbing people no one is just going to let them continue to stab people. You can’t stop a bullet.  I wanted to protest this to show my side and help my fellow student body and the fellow protesters,” said junior Tanner Loeffler.

Gutsch also wanted to show her side of the protest

“It’s a really important topic because, the students are the ones being affected by these things. I knew that South was doing one and I didn’t know if anyone was doing one here. I figured why shouldn’t we do one too.”

Administrators took notice of the students desire to protest and responded with the same thoughts on the matter.

“I think its important that we all take responsibility and look at ourselves and also whats going on in our communities. Just focusing on how we can best protect our kids,”  said assistant principal Kelly Heizman.

Sophomore Aaron Watson however was one of the students who did not attend this protest.

“If I wanted to give remembrance to the students of Florida I would do it on my own time. Not in school hours, which is the time they give us to work on school projects and homework,” said Watson.
