After listing 13 nervous habits to a classroom of 21 students, not a single student could deny they had at least one. Freshman Kathleen Rhodes was no exception. Rhodes qualified for four out of the 13 nervous habits listed.

Rhodes believed that nervous habits developed when you were born.”If you had a rougher life I think you get more nervous, or if you have crazier family,” she said.

Freshman Ethan Brown agreed that nervous habits came from “early childhood experiences.”  Brown noticed his nervous habits around kindergarten. After engaging in his habit he admitted, “I absolutely feel better after I do it.” He continues to add that nervous habits, “are stress relievers and make you feel better.”

For Psychology teacher Linda Jones, it was a different story. Jones corrected the fact that,”There doesn’t appear to be one reason that a person might develop a nervous habit. Even though we call them nervous habits, sometimes they may not be caused by anxiety at all. One reason a person might develop a nervous habit is that doing the behavior is in some way rewarding or (in psychology terms) reinforcing to the person.”

However, Jones noticed these habits throughout her classroom. She stated, “I have noticed behaviors that are often labeled as nervous habits in students. Fingernail biting would probably be the most common, but also foot-tapping, pencil tapping, sucking on pencil erasers, and hair twirling.”
